A Sobering Reflection of the Depravity of White Evangelical America
A sobering reflection of the depravity of white evangelical America reveals a movement that has frequently traded the radical, compassionate teachings of Jesus Christ for militant white Christian nationalism, systemic supremacy, and toxic partisanship
The greed, ignorance, and depravity of so many Americans is just unbelievable. How could anyone vote for Donald Trump in 2024? He is an obvious fraud, as well as an indicted and convicted felon—a malignant narcissist bordering on psychopathy. Yet he is revered by the White evangelical Christian community whose support has buoyed and sustained the MAGA movement for a decade.
The 2024 GOP voters ignored public warnings from generals and numerous prominent individuals who served in the first Trump administration, such as Miles Taylor, that a second Trump administration would be catastrophic for our already tattered democracy. Donald Trump was elected a second time largely by white and Christian voters who view racism and psychopathic sadism toward their perceived enemies as admirable.
“…about replicating North Korea’s demilitarized zone on the U.S. southern border, replete with land mines, barbed wire, electric fences, and armed guards. Trump described in graphic detail the sharp, flesh-piercing spikes he wanted installed on the border wall, designed to maim climbers so bloodily that other migrants would be scared to follow suit. He mused about U.S. soldiers firing on civilians, knowing that if they blew the legs out from underneath pregnant mothers, it would keep them from reaching the border…I witnessed Trump tell border patrol agents to ignore the law and to send arriving migrants right back into the hot-sun desert where they could die despite their legal right to claim asylum, offering to pardon anyone who got arrested for carrying out his directive.”
- Miles Taylor
In his second term, Trump’s ICE and Department of War have carried out these fantasies against sovereign nations, immigrants, and even American citizens, while the GOP Congress nods approvingly and does nothing to stop the madness. While it is convenient for us to think this is what we have become as a nation, this is actually who many of us have always been. Racial minorities and vulnerable populations have long been abused and scapegoated throughout our history. A large segment of the American populace has been lied to, gaslighted, race-baited, and propagandized for so long that some of its worst impulses have overtaken any semblance of humanity.
If the first election of Trump was evidence. The second election of Trump is an undeniable confirmation. The ignorance, narcissism, and depravity of a large swath of the American populace - even though it’s a minority of the overall population - is deeply distressing. The 6 deadly sins of propaganda, demagoguery, religious nationalism, greed, racism, and xenophobia are dangerous drugs that carry the evil seeds of fascist authoritarianism.
It is too late at this point to try to reason with MAGA voters, and of course, no amount of reasoning will affect the billionaire tech elites and other oligarchs consumed with greed and perceived power. We must focus on the roughly 100–110 million voting-age Americans who did not vote, including an estimated 10 to 20 million registered Democrats who are part of that number, as well as independents, to deliver an overwhelming defeat to the GOP and MAGA. At this point, that is the only message they will understand.
We do this with an easy-to-understand and easy-to-digest, inclusive economic populist message focused on the middle class (including white people, black people, people of color, and women). This message should also directly call out the corruption of the Trump administration and today’s Republican Party. We should not get distracted or divided by minute details. We should not focus on petty issues that lead to the endless fragmentation of the message and are used by the GOP to frighten and divide. The ideas of fairness and compassion should be enough for people to understand that the Democratic Party will look out for them without having to complicate the simple overall message.
